ZEFES project informative session and stakeholders onboarding

ZEFES  “Zero Emission, flexible vehicle platforms with modular powertrains serving the long-haul Freight EcoSystem” project has been kicked off and we would like to discuss with you possible engagement in ZEFES activities.

In the ZEFES project, 5 truck OEMs, 2 trailer OEMs, suppliers, logistic operators, and research partners will work together towards the overall goal of accelerating the integration of ZEVs for long distance heavy transport, by focusing on efficiency improvements, mass production capabilities and demonstrating the use of the technologies in daily operations.

In 2025, nine different vehicle concepts (5 BEV and 4 FCEV) will run over 1Mio kilometers across EU corridors in real daily operations (use cases), guided and validated by a digital platform (developed within the project) bringing ZEV adoption in the freight transport ecosystem a big step further. Vehicles will carry 40+ tn over distances up to 750 kms and with 500 km average in daily operation.

Ben will share the ambition, concept, objectives and main innovations to be developed and tested within ZEFES. 9 vehicle configurations will be tested in 15 missions in real conditions addressing all type of barriers or higher benefits conditions these vehicle configurations may encounter in their way to market deployment. Involvement of transportation companies, logistics service providers and shippers is high to ensure the implications in logistics applications are well addressed. Still, it will be possible for external parties to propose use cases and missions that could be considered in the testing and demonstration phases starting in 2025.

As a first step in ZEFES execution, we are mapping the requirements, use cases, metrics, business needs and business cases as well as identifying strategies to reduce Total Cost of Ownership. Marcel will share ZEFES preliminary findings and invite you to be engage actively in the project development.

ZEFES is collecting expectations and identifying barriers that should be addressed to reach the required outcome.

Fernando will share the opportunities for transportation companies, logistics service providers, freight forwarders and shippers to be involved in the project. Through the Stakeholder group in ZEFES we will address these questions:

1. how to design use cases to ensure a successfully operation 2025 onwards? Would you like to get involved in defining use cases, learning from the results in the demonstrations and/or running tests with the developed vehicles?
2. how to make compatible the transition to electric and hydrogen heavy duty trucks and the cross-border operation of the European Modular Systems (combination of two trailers and one tractor)
3. how to get road permissions and licensees to perform tests with non-homologated trucks and permissions to cross border between countries in European countries? Have you experienced barriers in this field already? In which countries?
4. how to get the developed vehicles homologated in European countries? Have you experienced barriers in this field already? In which countries?
5. how to get the energy infrastructure (charging and hydrogen) in place to ensure to run the mileage the vehicles are scheduled for?
6. Which other questions come to your mind when thinking on the transition?
