The ALICE Inland Waterway Transport (IWT) group has been formed with the intention to contribute to creating links across projects by supporting cross-fertilization, and to share innovative initiatives as well as technologies in the IWT sector that are in line with ALICE roadmaps.
The Inland Waterborne Transport (IWT) advantages such as low-energy and CO2 emissions are not fully exploited today due to gaps in the logistics system.
The main raised questions of the ALICE IWT thematic group are:
In light of the above questions and objectives, we engage with two innovative projects. Firstly, NOVIMOVE addresses IWT issues such as waiting times at terminals, bridges and locks, sub-optimal loading and navigation on rivers with a strategy is to improve container load factors, river voyage planning and execution, and by facilitating smooth passages through bridges and locks.
Secondly, the IW-NET project’s strategy is to optimize the EU Transport System, increasing the modal share of IWT, and thereby supporting the European Commission’s ambitions to reduce transport GHG emissions by two thirds by 2050. The IW-NET outputs include sustainable infrastructure management, by addressing infrastructure bottlenecks, innovative vessels with new vessel types for low water conditions and urban logistics requirements, as well as digitalization solutions including automation, synchromodality, awareness, and security of transactions to support an efficient and competitive IWT sector.
This webinar is of relevance to ALICE members interested in Inland Waterways including Shippers and cargo owners, Logistics service providers, freight forwarders and transportation companies, Intermodal operators, ports, service providers and researchers.
