As a key infrastructure in urban logistics, parcel lockers are not new and have been available for decades. However, in recent years, parcel lockers have received attention from business and policy makers as they are regarded as an enabler to reduce emissions of last mile delivery.
Many e-commerce vendors have encouraged customers to choose parcel lockers instead of home delivery to save emissions. We know they can reduce trips of home deliveries, but it raises the question – do parcel lockers generate more car journeys for pick-ups?
There are no standard sizes of parcel lockers. If they are to be used for the return of goods, standardisation is urgently required. In addition, there are many different operation models of parcel lockers. If they can be used by several logistics service providers, a key challenge is how to reduce the traffic of delivery vehicles. Consolidated delivery to parcel lockers can reduce traffic but how can we ensure fair competition and a level playfield?
This webinar, held on 29th January, at 15:30 – 16:15 CET, will invite practitioners from different cities with different characteristics to present their research results and current practices on the operation of parcel lockers. We will discuss the roles of parcel lockers and the potential enabling frameworks to support sustainable e-commerce.
