MACBETH: Multipoint Megawatt Charging for Battery Electric Truck Hubs

MACBETH is set to revolutionize the electrification of longhaul trucking by developing user-centric Megawatt Charging Hubs that tackle the technical, social, and economic challenges of deploying highpower charging infrastructure. In a sector critical to decarbonizing logistics transport, MACBETH will pilot advanced charging solutions designed to accelerate the shift to battery electric truckspaving the way for a greener, more sustainable future in line with the Paris Agreement, EU Green Deal, and Fitfor55 targets. 

MACBETH user-centric MCS charging hubs for long-haul trucking 

By bringing together 19 partners from across Europe, MACBETH aims to deliver a scalable, robust charging system that meets the evolving needs of the commercial transport sector. The project will:  

  • Develop multipoint charging hubs specifically tailored for battery electric trucks, ensuring compatibility with diverse operational demands.  
  • Integrate cutting-edge Megawatt Charging Systems with digital tools for real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and efficient energy management.  
  • Establish two demonstration sites in the Nordics and Benelux regions, chosen to represent varied geographic contexts and operational conditions.  
  • Generate invaluable insights and data to overcome barriers to mass deployment, thus supporting the transition to widespread electrification along major TEN-T corridors and logistic terminals.  
  • Deliver a system-level charging concept at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 8 by project completion, positioning Europe at the forefront of sustainable transport innovation. 

MACBETH demonstration and outcomes 

The real-world demonstration will validate MACBETH’s innovative charging hub concept through:  

  • Two strategically located pilot sites that capture a range of operational scenarios.  
  • Implementation of state-of-the-art Megawatt Charging Systems coupled with smart digital frameworks to optimise charging slot allocation and minimize downtime.  
  • A focus on addressing key challenges such as grid integration, rapid deployment, and cost efficiency to facilitate large-scale market adoption.  
  • Generation of actionable insights for industrial stakeholders, policy makers, and research communities to further support the shift toward zero-emission long-haul transport. 

What is ALICE’s role in MACBETH? 

Within MACBETH, ALICE (Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe) plays a pivotal role in bridging research and industry.  

ALICE is tasked with:  

  • Engaging a broad spectrum of stakeholders to gather user requirements and ensure the solutions developed are practical and aligned with real-world needs.  
  • Coordinating dissemination and communication activities to promote knowledge exchange across the logistics and transport ecosystems.  
  • Supporting the integration of MACBETH’s innovations into existing transport infrastructures by fostering collaboration among policymakers, fleet managers, and technology providers.  
  • Ensuring that the project’s outcomes contribute directly to sustainable transport objectives and the broader digitalisation of logistics operations.
