Promoting diversity in logistics: the ALICE Women in Logistics initiative

Thursday, March 6th, 2025

Diversity is essential for innovation in logistics. People with different perspectives enhance problem-solving and adaptability, which are key to navigating today’s complex supply chains. ALICE is committed to promoting gender diversity and creating an inclusive industry through collaboration, research and advocacy.

Lessons learned and feedback used to build the framework for the ALICE initiative

  • Supporting and voice current initiatives results to maximize impact. Over the last year, ALICE came across several initiatives that are doing a fantastic job and therefore, ALICE needs to support running initiatives and add value in the crowded landscape of initiatives.
  • Digitalisation lowers barriers for women. Thanks to digitalization, the logistics industry can now include diverse talent in roles once dominated by men due to physical demands.
  • Engagement of male allies is essential. Inclusivity efforts should engage men as allies fostering collaboration and a balanced workplace culture.
  • Focus on merit, not just gender parity. Gender diversity should be about equitable opportunities rather than enforcing a strict 50/50 representation.
  • ALICE is built upon diversity. ALICE secretariat team involves 20+ individuals, 10 females, a very diverse team with origins from 13 countries spanning 3 different continents and speaking 10+ languages. ALICE provides a safe and empowering environment, but recognises the need for further progress in the representation of women in leadership.

Future directions

  • Encourage and enable informal exchanges and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Encourage networking and mentoring between different professionals.
  • Strengthen educational partnerships promoting diversity and adapted to new skills needs. Work with universities and industry to offer scholarships and internships in logistics and innovation. Promote our members to engage and support the development of education programmes adapted to the fast evolving needs.
  • Advocate for better workplaces. Promote work-life balance policies and diversity in the workforce.
  • Increase visibility of successful diversity initiatives. Continue to showcase best practices within ALICE and our partner networks.
  • Influence EU policy and research. Assess the impact of gender equality efforts in EU-funded projects and advocate for inclusive innovation strategies. Explore opportunities for logistics in programmes such as ERASMUS+.

Our next activity will be on 7 May at 15:00, in which we will share and exchange on the Activity Report 2024 and elaborate on Future directions.

ALICE remains committed to promoting diversity, equality and inclusion in the logistics sector. We invite all professionals, women and men, to join the Women in Logistics community, contribute to ongoing discussions and help shape a more inclusive future for logistics.
