Biofuels carbon footprint measurement: A short term GHGs emissions abatement opportunity?

Rik Arends is the Program Director at Smart Freight Centre, the global NGO dedicated to reduce logistics emissions; we set the standard for calculating and reporting GHG emissions from logistics and provide the directions for how to take action and reduce logistics GHG emissions.

In his capacity as Program Director, Rik leads the development of several programs, including our Low Emission Fuels and Vehicles program and our Data Access and Exchange program, working with multinational corporations and associations to decarbonize logistics.

Rik is trained as a civil engineer and worked on sustainable transport in Europe and the Global South.

Dr. Fernando Liesa is Secretary General at ALICE, Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe since its creation in 2013.

Fernando holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering by University of Zaragoza (2004, Spain). Fernando has 20+ years of experience in research, knowledge management and management of triple helix organizations and relationships linked to environmental and chemical engineering, process industries, manufacturing and lately, (+15 years) to logistics and supply chain management. Fernando has worked for more than 19 years linked to the European Arena and Institutions and is part of AEROFLEX Advisory Board

After his PhD, Fernando worked for the Technology Transfer Office of Univeristiy of Zaragoza (2004-2006) and then moved to the Zaragoza Logistics Center (MIT Global Scale Network Center) as Knowledge Transfer & External Funding Director (2006 to 2014).  He combined this position with the General Management of the Spanish Logistics Technology Platform, LOGISTOP (2007 to 2014). From 2014 to 2016, Fernando worked for ENIDE being full time engaged with ALICE since September 2016.

Szymon Oscislowski is a Deputy Head of Unit in the Directorate General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) of the European Commission.

His responsibilities include policy oversight in the field of freight transport and logistics, including digital transformation, sustainable development and maritime financing.

Before joining the Commission he was a programme manager and director in local administration in Poland, dealing with external financing of projects in the area of transport and energy.

Tharsis Teoh (Dr.-Ing) holds a MSc. in Transport & Logistics and a PhD on the topic of electrification and charging strategies for city logistics. He has worked in academia (TU Delft) and as a consultant on the topics of transport policy and decarbonization. At Smart Freight Centre he leads the Low Emission Fuels and Vehicles project under the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) umbrella.

His primary interests are in the adaptation strategies needed by transport operators for the emerging technical landscape of alternative fuel vehicles, the systematic and defensible calculation of emissions reduction, and total cost of ownership.

Colin has been involved within transport certification at Energy Saving Trust since 2007 and is currently involved in a number of projects relating to transport fleet emissions and air quality. This work includes assessment of GHG emissions and certification of emission reduction systems for road transport supporting the rollout of Low Emissions Zones in the UK. Current work is built on Energy Saving Trust’s strong track record in setting standards related to retrofit systems and the adoption of alternative fuels.

With respect to transport GHG emission accounting, assurance and certification, Colin was the project lead at Energy Saving Trust for the Green Freight Europe (GFE) programme and is a recognised expert on logistics emissions accounting and assurance within the Global Logistics Emissions Council. Colin led Energy Saving Trust’s role as project partner within the European Commission Horizon 2020 funded LEARN Project (Logistics Emissions Accounting and Reduction Network) and participates in the UK Department for Transport led Freight Emissions Reduction Group.

Andrea supports Shell’s Heavy-Duty Road Transport Customers in using LNG and Bio-LNG to fulfil their commercial, environmental footprint, and safety needs. She helps our Customers achieving their decarbonisation and “Net Zero” emission objectives. Andrea has led the introduction of bio-LNG across Europe, fostering collaboration across freight owners (shippers), logistics companies and truck manufacturers. Previously, Andrea worked in various marketing and commercial roles in Retail in Brazil, the UK, the US and The Netherlands.

Rémi Despoix has joined sennder in September 2021 to develop the advanced fuels offering on the French market both on the client and carrier side. He is involved in different projects for clients and also in close contacts with carriers as he is in charge of sourcing those that use advanced fuels. Rémi knows the different constraints that shippers and carriers are facing when it comes to using alternative solutions. Also in terms of operations for a freight forwarder, the use of advanced fuels requests some changes in the process. Prior to sennder, Rémi worked in the motorcycle industry in France and in the hospitality field in China.

Industrial engineer at Politecnico di Torino, after attending the MBA from SDA Bocconi in Milan became consultant at The Boston Consulting Group, Milan office, he conducted strategy and supply chain project in the FMCG and durable goods sectors 3ys.

After being involved in some family entrepreneurial activities (automation software and business services) and in 2001 he was back in Strategy Consulting setting up his own company, carrying out projects in many different business sectors.

In 2010 together with Prof. Marchet and Prof. Perego from Politecnico di Milano, he promoted the Osservatorio Contract Logistics (www.contractlogistics.it), a R&D project 100% privately sponsored by logistics companies whose aim is to study the logistics outsourcing in Italy; the last annual event saw 1000+ attendees – professionals from the logistics sector.

In 2016 he co-founded GreenRouter (www.greenrouter.it) offering a web-based managerial tool for calculating, reporting and analysing – through what if scenarios – GHG emission along the Supply Chain. GreenRouter is EN16258 compliant since the very beginning and “GLEC approved” since 2019.

I am working for Volkswagen since 1998 in several areas and responsibilities in logistics and purchasing. For several years I worked in various responsibilties  in the field of finished vehicle logistics covering all transport modes.

Furthermore, since 2012 together with a small team I am responsible for the strategic set up and development of the sustainability guidelines in logistics and measurements to reduce the logistics carbon foot-print.

Since 2019 the team can focus full-time on the ever increasing importance of sustainability topics in the logistics sector.
