CCAM Logistics Task Force

Thursday, February 20th, 2025

The CCAM Logistics Task Force is a key initiative within ALICE’s Cooperative, Connected, and Automated Logistics (CCAL) Activity Field, launched as part of the MODI Project. This task force brings together logistics stakeholders, researchers, and technology providers to examine the technical, societal, and commercial aspects of CCAL, with a focus on integrating SAE Level 4 automated logistics solutions into real-world operations.

A collaborative platform for industry leaders

The CCAM Logistics Task Force serves as a dynamic forum for shippers, freight forwarders, logistics operators, hubs, technology providers, and research organisations. By fostering collaboration across the sector, the task force aims to shape sustainable business models, identify operational requirements, address regulatory barriers, and develop technical solutions that will facilitate the widespread adoption of CCAL technologies.

At the heart of this initiative is the MODI Project, which will demonstrate five real-world logistics use cases across the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, and Norway throughout 2025. These demonstrations will test automated CCAL vehicles at TRL 7, assess the role of Physical and Digital Infrastructure (PDI) in supporting automation, and explore how these technologies can be seamlessly integrated into modern supply chains.

Structured engagement & stakeholder participation

The CCAM Logistics Task Force is structured around five key interactions throughout 2025 & 2026, ensuring a steady exchange of insights between stakeholders and project partners.

  • Three dedicated webinars/workshops will take place in January, June, and November, where project findings and industry input will be discussed.
  • Two rounds of one-on-one stakeholder interviews with multiple stakeholders will be conducted, with a focus on societal readiness (February) and business model innovation (March/April).
  • A final event in March 2026 will summarise the overall project outcomes and industry impact, bringing together key insights from MODI’s logistics demonstrations.

By participating in these sessions, stakeholders will contribute to the foundation of Societal Readiness aspects related to CCAM implementation as well as to the Business Models development within MODI Project. Their inputs will be considered also for the creation of Impact Assessment and Book of Recommendations in MODI Project. In return, participants will gain early access to first-hand insights, discuss automation challenges, and contribute to shaping market adoption strategies. While participation is flexible, the MODI team strongly encourages involvement in the stakeholder interviews, as these discussions will play a crucial role in refining automated logistics strategies and guiding future policy and investment decisions.

Insights from the Kick-off Meeting

The Kick-off Meeting of the CCAM Logistics Task Force, held online on 28 January 2025 (14:00–15:00 CET), marked the formal launch of this collaborative initiative. The event brought together logistics industry representatives, automation experts, and MODI project partners to discuss the project’s objectives, expected outcomes, and 2025 priorities.

The session commenced with an overview of the MODI Project, led by Angjelo Andoni (Project Manager, ALICE), followed by presentations on the five MODI use cases, delivered by industry leaders from across Europe:

  • Netherlands (UC NL): Mr. Sven Jansen (TNO)
  • Germany (UC DE): Ms. Esther Riedemann (New Mobility Solutions)
  • Sweden (UC SE): Ms. Maria Backlund (Lindholmen Science Park)
  • Norway & Cross-Border Operations (UC NO & UCCAM – Rotterdam to Oslo): Mr. Petter Arnesen (SINTEF)

Each presentation outlined the challenges, opportunities, and expected contributions of these use cases, focusing on how SAE Level 4 automation will impact logistics efficiency, infrastructure needs, and regulatory frameworks across European transport corridors.

Following the project presentations, Mr. Andoni provided further insight into the CCAM Logistics Task Force, outlining its structure, objectives, and benefits for industry stakeholders. Participants were encouraged to actively contribute their expertise, share their perspectives, and engage in discussions to help refine the integration of automation in logistics.

Key thematic discussions

The Kick-off Meeting also included two thematic discussions, exploring critical aspects of CCAL integration:

  1. Societal Readiness for CCAL

Led by Mr. Andre Bekkevold Sande (SINTEF), this session examined the potential impact of automated freight transport on logistics operations, covering:

  • Efficiency gains and operational cost reductions.
  • Challenges related to regulation and workforce adaptation.
  • Infrastructure requirements for scaling automation.
  • Key enablers for successful implementation of automated logistics.
  1. Business Models for CCAL

Moderated by Ms. Mina Saghafian (TOI), this session assessed how automation will reshape the business landscape for logistics operators, focusing on:

  • The financial case for investment in CCAL technologies.
  • New business models that could emerge from automation.
  • Market challenges and opportunities for large-scale adoption.
  • The role of collaboration between stakeholders in ensuring successful implementation.

Key takeaways

The Kick-off Meeting successfully laid the groundwork for the CCAM Logistics Task Force, providing attendees with:

  • A comprehensive introduction to the MODI Project and its five logistics demonstrations.
  • A structured roadmap for engagement throughout 2025.
  • A forum for addressing CCAL’s technical, regulatory, and economic challenges.

The discussions held during the Kick-off Meeting emphasised the importance of industry collaboration in ensuring the successful deployment of automated logistics solutions. As the MODI Project progresses, the CCAM Logistics Task Force will continue to engage with stakeholders, refining strategies to support the real-world adoption of CCAL technologies.
