Progress of SENSE project on developing Physical Internet (PI)

Industry feedback on first draft Roadmap towards PI

The Physical Internet Workshop held on 9 and 10th October 2018 at MAN Truck and Bus Forum Munich, with Industry representatives and other Alice members, gave good input and feedback on the first draft Roadmap to PI develped under the H2020 funded project SENSE.

During the first day of the workshop the concept of PI was shared and discussed, as well the main areas of development and the specific actions that need to be done in the short term to get the next steps for the realization of Physical Internet.

On day 2, the connection was made with different ongoing projects and initiatives contributing to PI. Presentations and learnings were discussed with the following projects:

Nextnet, scenarios for future supply chains
Mobility 4 EU, Actin plan for the future of Logistics in Europe
Aeroflex, Future vehicles and the PI
The Smartbox project GS1, development of a standardized box for retail
Clusters 2.0, development of new modular logistics units and a stepping stone to PI
NEXTRUST, The project on Neutral Multi supplier- Multi retailer platform
ICONET, New ICT infrastructure and reference architecture to support operations in future PI logistics Networks

The main outcomes of the workshop discussion can be summarized as follows:

Five main areas for PI development were identified and agreed among stakeholders:

Access and adoption
Governance
System design
PI nodes
PI network services

The different Topics and milestones mentioned by the participants and belonging to the 5 main areas are listed below. On basis of this input the next draft Roadmap will be further developed in the coming months and presented and discussed with the different stakeholders at the coming International Physical Internet Conference in July in London, 9-11 July 2019.
